Are our brains wired to learn to read in the same way they are wired to walk and talk?
Through meaningful exposure and interaction, most children naturally acquire oral language. They learn vocabulary, recognize the sounds and patterns of their language, and begin using increasingly complex grammar, all without formal instruction.
Reading develops differently.
We can read to children every day and surround them with books, signs, and written words. These experiences are enormously valuable, but most children will not learn to read simply through exposure. They must be taught that the marks on the page carry meaning and how to recognize and interpret them.
Why? Our brains are naturally wired for oral language, but not specifically for print.
Learning to read requires the brain to connect abstract visual symbols with the language it already understands. Some children form these connections readily; many others need explicit instruction and meaningful support.
Humanity Spoke Long Before It Wrote
The history of writing reveals something important: human beings communicated through oral language for countless generations before developing ways to represent it visually. Writing evolved gradually within particular cultural and social conditions. Early systems often used images and signs to represent objects, ideas, or words; over time, some symbols came to represent parts of spoken language. Egyptian hieroglyphics, for example, included both meaning-based signs and signs for consonantal sounds. Later, the Phoenician script used a relatively small set of consonant symbols and influenced several subsequent alphabets.
We can see further evidence that writing is not a natural or universal development by looking around the world today. Every known human society has language, yet some languages—including those spoken in small or geographically isolated communities—do not have a widely used writing system.
According to Torah tradition, however, the Hebrew letters are not simply a human invention. The letters of the Torah are holy and were given to us by Hashem at Matan Torah. It is fascinating that influential alphabetic systems were developing in the ancient Near East during broadly related historical periods.
The larger point is that oral language is a universal human capacity, while writing depends on an established system of symbols—whether developed within a society or, as we believe about the Aleph-Bet, given from Shamayim. Either way, each new reader must be explicitly taught to recognize and interpret those symbols.
To understand what that learning requires, we need to look at how the brain processes print.
How the Brain Learns Print
The human brain has systems for processing oral language and making sense of the visual world. We recognize faces, identify objects, and notice shapes and patterns.
When we learn to read, the brain connects these visual and language systems. It learns that a particular visual form carries linguistic meaning. Neuroscientists sometimes call this process neuronal recycling: the brain adapts systems it already has to support the newer skill of literacy.
Consider a young child looking at: בּ
One child may recognize this arrangement of lines as the letter Bet. Another may see only an unfamiliar visual form.
Many children have difficulty attending to the defining features of letters, remembering their identities, or discriminating between similar forms. A child may recognize a letter during one lesson but not the next, or confuse it with another letter whose shape is similar.
More repetition is not always the answer. Sometimes the child needs a meaningful way to organize and retrieve the information.
What if we paired the abstract symbol with something the brain already finds meaningful and memorable?

Pairing the Abstract with the Meaningful and Memorable
Letters are abstract; familiar objects and pictures are meaningful and memorable. Embedded picture mnemonics bring the two together. To help a child remember Bet, for example, we pair the authentic letter with an illustration of a bayit whose form echoes its shape:
בּ ↔ bayit
“This is a Bet. The bayit helps us remember the bet.”
The picture does not become the letter, nor do we call it a Bet. It is a visual hint that strengthens the association with the authentic letter. As the child begins to recognize Bet independently, the picture and story can be gradually removed. Embedded mnemonics are temporary instructional scaffolds—not additional information children must master. Some children need this support more than others, but the goal is always direct recognition: בּ = bet.

Why We Always Show the Authentic Letter
Because the Hebrew letters are holy, we carefully distinguish between the letter and an illustration inspired by its form.
The illustration may resemble the letter, but it is not the letter. We always place the authentic Hebrew symbol beside the picture in its original, unembellished form.
We also call the letter by its proper name.
We do not teach “Bayit Bet” or give the letter an invented character name that the child may continue using after the mnemonic is no longer needed.
The child never has to unlearn a nickname or separate the letter’s true identity from a character’s name. The letter was always bet. The bayit was simply the hint.
Research Supports This Principle
In a study by Adina Shmidman and Linnea Ehri, 36 English-speaking preschoolers learned ten unfamiliar Hebrew letters and their corresponding sounds. Some letters were taught through familiar objects drawn to echo the letters’ forms. For comparison, the children saw the same objects presented without a visual resemblance to the letters.
The children mastered the embedded letters in fewer trials, confused them less often, and remembered them better one week later. They also showed stronger transfer to reading and spelling tasks. Earlier research similarly found that children learned letter associations more successfully when familiar pictures were integrated with the letters’ forms than when the pictures were unrelated to the letter shapes or no pictures were used.
While these studies taught letter-sound relationships, our initial focus is letter recognition and names. In Hebrew, a letter’s name often provides a direct pathway to its sound: once children know the letter name, they can isolate its initial sound to identify the sound the letter commonly represents. By strengthening the connection between a letter’s form and name, embedded picture mnemonics can support both immediate letter recognition and the later retrieval of its sound.
More Than a Memory Support
The Hebrew letters are not empty forms. Their names have meanings, their shapes and histories are significant, and they carry profound linguistic and spiritual ideas.
A thoughtfully designed picture mnemonic can introduce Hebrew vocabulary, connect a letter to Jewish life, highlight its form, and open conversations about the depth and holiness of the aleph bet.
For one child, the illustration may offer fascinating enrichment. For another, it may provide the support that finally allows an elusive letter to stick.
In either case: The illustration supports the letter. It never replaces it.
