Unit 6 – Cholom Student Guidebook

The Cholom Guidebook builds off of the knowledge students have learned in previous lessons (Kamatz, Patach, Tzeireh, Segol, Sh’va). It focuses on:

• The vowel Cholom, phonemic awareness, discriminating between Cholom and other vowels
• Recognizing and understanding the usage of the two types of Choloms
• Building on the Sh’va rules from previous lessons with less supports
• Introducing new vocabulary and practice in context with exciting stories
• Emphasis on learning Hebrew numbers and colors
• Plural form of words (suffix “Ot”) and changing nouns from singular to plural
• Introducing and experimenting with present tense verbs

Cholom Decodable Books

Behold is a set of five Cholom books designed to engage children in meaningful Hebrew reading practice. Each set of Nikud Quests books gradually build upon the language skills from the previous series. With the use of picture supports and repetition, learners can learn that they are capable of understanding Hebrew. Children can enjoy and learn while they read about real life heroes, silly animals, nature, and comparison of how bread was made back in the days and today.

Cholam Games

We know that children need movement, repetition, and action to stay focused. There’s only a limited amount of engagement that could be had on a sheet of paper, so we implement exciting and invigorating games into our curriculum that help children practice in an engaging way. Visual activities like puzzle cards, dominoes, matching games, and coloring exercises give children lots of exposure to words in different formats. By using and learning words through games with repetitions and variation, children will remember words in a meaningful and fun way that is truly effective.

The cholom game pack builds off of students’ knowledge from previous lessons and concentrates on exposing students to the two different cholom variations. This game pack works on building nouns, verbs, and adjectives, with a lot of focus on learning colors, shapes, and numbers. Added features include a Go-Fish style game to practice Hebrew colors, games to find shapes in nature, as well as using Hebrew number names to practice clock math. 

Included are 10 sets of cards for playing games, building language, and engaging practice.
