Segol- Unit 4 Student Guidebook

In the Segol Guidebook, the character Temach leads children through exciting quests. The Segol Guidebook builds off of the knowledge students learned in the Tzeireh lesson. It focuses on:

• The vowel Segol, phonemic awareness, discriminating between Segol and other vowels

• Exposing children to the idea of conjugating adjectives according to female/male nouns

• Learning how to read and use the prefixes (Lamed: “To”/”For”, Mem: “From”) and composing phrases with them

• Integrating “Yesh” (“There is”) and “Ein” (“There isn’t”) into lessons and stories

• Exposure to future and past tense

• Building longer sentences using cumulative vocabulary from previous lessons

Segol Decodable Books

Behold is a set of seven segol books designed to engage children in meaningful Hebrew reading practice. Each set of Nikud Quests books gradually build upon the language skills from the previous series. Learners can gain fluency in decoding skills, while learning Hebrew vocabulary and grammar. With the use of picture supports and repetition, learners can learn that they are capable of understanding Hebrew. The Nikud Quest books span across the genres from fables, to folktales, to realistic fiction, to expository.

Segol Games

We know that children need movement, repetition, and action to stay focused. There’s only a limited amount of engagement that could be had on a sheet of paper, so we implement exciting and invigorating games into our curriculum that help children practice in an engaging way. Visual activities like puzzle cards, dominoes, matching games, and coloring exercises give children lots of exposure to words in different formats. By using and learning words through games with repetitions and variation, children will remember words in a meaningful and fun way that is truly effective.
